Provide Ample, Frequent Feedings During the Day

Babies require many calories to fuel their rapid growth during the early months. Just look at the remarkable difference between a one-day-old newborn and a one-year-old walking-talking toddler! So much growth happens, and it is fueled by the tiny amount of food that a baby’s stomach holds. This means frequent, small meals are best. Babies who are a bit short on calories during the day will take in more calories at night.

La Leche League explains another aspect of the breastfeeding process that affects your baby’s feeding patterns: “During the early months, many babies do what is called ‘cluster feeding’: spacing feedings closer together at certain times of the day (typically during the evening) and going longer between feedings at other times.” So be sure that you are responding to all of your baby’s hunger cues, even if they are subtle, during the day, because if feedings are shortened during the day they will be made up during the night. Keep in mind that all newborn babies need to be fed often, but it’s according to their own unique needs.
